Please continue to share your announcements for the next few days. Next week we'll launch the first of our two topics for August:
*First Two Weeks: Gender Roles in Children's Picture Books. *A recent study (abstract here http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11199-013-0285-0) finds that the stereotype of nurturing mothers and breadwinning fathers persisted in 20^th century picture books. Not surprising, perhaps, for a study that looked at books from 1902 -- 2000,but the authors found, to their surprise, that the stereotypes persisted right up to the end of the century. Do you see progress and change or more of the same thirteen years into the 21^st century?During the first half of August, we invite you to talk about gender roles in children's picture books, including books that defy stereotypesand meet your expectations for reflecting the reality of women's and men's---and boys and girls---lives, regardless of
when they were published.
You can read the Salon.com article about the study here:

*Second Two Weeks: Alphabetter: Creative Concept Books.*Twenty-six letters aren't much to work with. So how do you create a book about the alphabet that offers up something fresh and new?During the second half of August, we invite you to talk concept books---alphabet, colors,
shapes, numbers, comparisons....you name it.What are some of the qualities you look for in a concept book, and what makes your favorites stand out from the crowd?
