I'm currently about 3/4 done with "I Capture the Castle" by Dodie Smith and I couldn't help but think of it when this topic came up. The castle plays such an interesting role of contradiction as a dwelling that should be grand and inhabited by the wealthy but instead is decaying and inhabited by the poor. Still so very magical, though, and integral to the story and characters.
