I like James Rumford's books including "Traveling Man: The Journey of Ibn Battuta, 1325-1354"; "Calabash Cat and His Amazing Journey"; and "Chee-Lin: A Giraffe's Journey." Also "A Giraffe Goes to Paris" by Maary Tavener Holmes and John Harris and "The Travels of Benjamin of Tudela: Through Three Continents in the Twelfth Century" by Uri Shulevitz. (It's amazing how far and for how long people (and giraffes) traveled before cars and planes.
