I was traveling a bit myself, with limited email access, so I may have miss ed a mention of my favorite road trip book:  Madeleine L'Engle's The Moon by Night.  I read it when I was approximately 13, and that was closer to the early 1960s setting of the book.  But I've reread it since then, and it definitely captures the angst of being 14 and dealing with internal and external changes.  And it covers the US from New England to Los Angeles.
