Walk Two Moons is definitely a road trip/finding oneself/history book.
I think Peak by Roland Smith can be considered as such. The trek to climb to the top of Everest parallel the journey of the father/son relationship.
Our six grade students examine books as Journeys at the beginning of the year. They finish Becoming Naomi Leon by Pam Ryan in the summer and we start the year talking about physical and emotional journeys of the protagonists.
Motivations, destinations, changes in traits and self knowledge, etc. Each of them picks out a "journey" book from the library and write about these components. They study Greek myths and the Odyssey so this topic is very fitting. Can't wait to see titles suggested here to add to the recommended journey books.
