Travel Books

The first one that popped into my mind was an older book called Rules of the Road by Joan Bauer. It has been a long time since I've read it so the details are hazy, but I loved it. Jenna (16 yrs old) gets a job that involves driving Mrs. Gladstone from Chicago to Texas and ends up learning a lot along the way.

Another author who takes readers on "travels" is Christopher Paul Curtis with Bud Not Buddy, The Mighty Miss Malone and The Watsons go to Birmingham. These books have amazing characters and plenty of humor as they journey.

A picture book that came to mind was Ruth and the Green Book. Ruth and her family use the Green Book to locate places they may stay along their journey since many hotels and even gas stations and restaurants did not serve African Americans. There are facts about the actual Green Book at the end of the book.

Sitti's Secrets is another great travel picture book. A young girl from the U.S. visits her grandmother in a Palestinian village. There is a language barrier, but they find ways to communicate by the end of the trip. It's one that touches my heart each time I revisit it.

I wrote a post about YA earlier this summer that is somewhat related called The Worry-Free Vacation . The characters are not all necessarily traveling, but the books I chose to highlight were from all around the world.

Have a great time "traveling" through literature.

Crystal
