I imagine many members of the CCBC-Net community ARE on the road this holiday weekend. But let's get started with our theme for the first part of July regardless:

*On the Road (Again): More Books about Travel and Journeys:* We have a recent booklist on the Lee and Low blog* to thank for the inspiration to revisit a topic we first explored in July, 2007. Whether it's around the block or across the borders of states and nations, we invite you to share your favorite books for children and teens in which characters are on the move, discovering new places or revisiting ones they love.

In the meantime, what are books that come to mind for you when you think travel, journeys, or road trips?

A new book that comes to my mind--and one that's receiving it's deserving share of starred reviews--is Cynthia Kadohata's novel "The Thing about Luck," in which twelve-year-old Summer's travels with her grandparents and younger brother, all part of a harvesting crew helping bring in farmer's wheat, is a journey inward as well as across the landscape of the heartland. There are so many things I appreciate about this novel, not the least of which is the way it' characters are slowly revealed through their actions and interactions, and the way Summer gradually gains a new perspective on herself and those around her because she takes the time to reflect, and finds the courage to act.
