Adam Rex and Mac Barnett crack me up, Billy Twitter's Blue Whale Problem. Lois Ehlert's sly word play and visual humor makes me smile, I never tire of the story telling voice of Bubba And Beau Best Friends by Kathi Appelt. Although not picture books, I wouldn't want anyone to overlook the obvious - the series of joke books by Katie Hall illustrated by Simms Taback- they are available individually as easy to read puffins or reprinted in large format as Simms Taback's Great Big Book of Spacey, Snakey, Buggy Riddles.
The sly humor of The Secret Knowledge of Grown-Ups by David Wisniewski is a perennial for high-interest (kids who can't find ANYTHING to read)
Pigs seems to come to mind immediately when thinking about funny books- Pigs Aplenty, Pigs Galore, by David McPhail, Piggie Pie by Marjorie Palantini and A Pig Parade is a Terrible Idea by Michael Ian Black. In each of these titles the illustrations add a superb layer of humor supporting the straight-faced text. The deadpan humor of Children Make Terrible Pets by Peter Brown never gets old.
From Adam Rex- kinda off topic but interesting - how he makes a picture book.
