According to quo tes on the ALA website, the selection that year was significantly influence d by the book design, its use of " ingeni ous gatefolds and horizontal and vertical framing" to enhance the perspecti ve. How many publishers have spent the money on innovative and expensive de signs in books by multicultural illustrators? More importantly, if the publ isher had put the same kind of investment into BEAUTIFUL BLACKBIRD, would t hat have changed anything, or did the fact that BLACKBIRD was an African fo lktale about a black bird, written and illustrated by a black man lead thos e promoting, reviewing and evaluating children's books that year to conclud e that it was only a story for Black kids? font-family: sans-serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); line-he

Let's make another comparison from the same year. Hope Anita Smith 's THE WAY A DOOR CLOSES (2004) won a Steptoe award, and according to the d escription, the standards for this award are the same as the CSK, so I'll c onsider it the equivalent of a Caldecott Honor book for purposes of this ar gument. In a country where close to half of families are confronted with di vorce, parents leaving, and sometimes returning, the theme of this book is universal and it too can be read across culture lines. The writing i s wonderful, and the illustrations marvelous - Kirkus even mentioned Evans' illustrations in its review of THE WAY A DOOR CLOSES.

So why wasn't it chosen for a Caldecott Honor? W ere the Honor books chosen that year clearly more "consequential" than THE SOUND OF A DOOR CLOSING? In 2004 the Caldecott honor books were "Ella Sar ah Gets Dressed," illustrated and written by Margaret Chodos-Irvine and pub lished by Harcourt, Inc.; "What Do You Do With a Tail Like This?" illustrat ed and written by Steve Jenkins and Robin Page and published by Houghton Mi fflin Company; and "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus," illustrated and wr itten by Mo Willems and published by Hyperion.

I'm sorry Charles, but I can not agree with your conclusions. B ooks considered for the CSK awards and honors are high quality books that s hould be appearing in the Caldecott and Newbery lists. Just because they co mprise a smaller more focused set of texts which falls within the larger re alm of what is considered for the Caldecott and Newbery awards does not mea n they are less universal or less "consequential" than other books.
