thank you KT for the clarification; I wonder if ALSC might want to review t hat question of whether the photos need to be taken by the artist -- since, for example, in collage, photos take on new meaning and impact when juxtap osed by an artist. I would argue that in excellent NF design photos can bec ome a new aesthetic element, created by the designer/author just as much as photos do in collage -- with the added power that the images also convey m eaning related to the text. But as to whether photos have the status of art -- surely that cannot be in question -- Edward Steichen, Lewis Hine, Rober t Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams, Gordon Parks... . -- the great photographers surely belong in any canon of great artists, a nd there is no reason why one could not have a passion for working with mat erials amined at ALSC ages.
