Thanks, all, for a lively, thoughtful, and informative discussion this week about the Caldecott Medal and diversity. It's clear that this is a topic people are passionate about!
Many people have pointed out the questions we are raising are complex and multilayered, and cannot be separated from challenges with diversity in the publishing world and the library world. And these are also issues that many of us have been discussing now for decades, during which time we have seen little to no change. Still, we can always find allies and kindred spirits in our professions who care about these issues as deeply as we do. And, of course, I hope that everyone will look beyond award books to find outstanding books reflecting various kinds of diversity to share with children.
Please continue the discussion thoughout the weekend. On Monday, we will switch gears and begin a discussion of the art in Caldecott Medal books. I see Tricia Stohr-Hunt has already provided us with a segue with her question about diversity of artistic media used in Caldecott Medal books. I look forward to discussion of this question -- and more about art -- in the days to come.
