As a writer and a librarian, I'd like to add you have to also consider who makes up the committees that are selecting titles to receive the rewards. This raises issues of gender, sexual identity, class, race, ethnicity, and also location (it was always funny to me how East and West coast writing are much less likely to be considered "regional" than Southern or Midwestern). It's also telling that committees that I'm thinking, at least recently, have been predominantly female (since they were made up of librarians) - like the Newbery & Caldecott - still select male creators.
