I agree with Rachel that one thing that can help is having diverse award co mmittees composed of members who bring a variety of perspectives, includi ng those that have been underrepresented or neglected in the past. (I also admit that one of the challenges in achieving this goal is the largely whit e demographics of our profession). I also think that the ALA Spectrum Schol arship Program has done a very fine job of identifying and nurturing ethnic minority professionals within librarianship. In 2011, ALSC -- which admi nisters the Caldecott Medal -- also became the sponsor of a Spectrum Schola rship, with funding from the Frederic G. Melcher Endowment. Melcher, as you probably know, was instrumental in establishing the Caldecott Medal. Julie Corsaro
