Hooray for you Joan! I couldn't agree with you more as I was the chair of the committee that chose OFFICER BUCKLE AND GLORIA for the Caldecott Medal. We felt that the artwork reflected Mr. Caldecott's sense of design, composition, and use of line. We were quite proud that the book was the first truly funny book, breaking the glass ceiling that 'only serious or sophisticated books could win. So let's hear it for Gloria!

Officer Buckle and Gloria is my very favorite. The surprise element for the children is such fun to anticipate. When they see Officer Buckle and Gloria watching themselves on TV, their reaction is sucking in their breath, and then the "uh oh" or "oh no" follows. Also they enjoy the two becoming friends again, and I like the idea that we can forgive and be forgiven for our foibles and mistakes, we can make peace, and our friendships can continue. About the bookmaking, I like the end papers with stars (police badges) giving safety tips. They suggest art projects for the children, adding safety tips of their own to star badges they can make and wear. The primary colors seem just right to capture the humor and familiarity of the story. Joan Atkinson
