Thank you, Robert Reid, for your compelling question about multicultural representation in the Caldecott.
I just wanted to let East Coast folks know that there will be a book talk on the history and future of picture books, in honor of the medal's 75th anniversary. It will be moderated by Leonard Marcus at Politics and Prose Bookstore in Washington DC on May 19. (Full disclosure, I will be a participant). Chris Myers, Jon Scieszka, Neal Porter, Mac Barnett, Laura Vaccaro Seeger, Meg Medina. Should make for a very deep (and let's face it, funny) conversation. Free.
As for my favorite of all time: Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears...the Dillons are my gold standard in so many ways. More recently, I admired the lovely A Sick Day for Amos McGee. The gentle spirit of friendship in that book held me for a long while.
