Having interviewed and being friendly with over 25 Caldecott winners it is hard to choose one. Among the most memorable was meeting Uri Shulevitz in his sparse Greenwich Village apartment in New York City, the morning he received the call from the committee telling him his THE FOOL OF THE WORLD AND THE FLYING SHIP (Farrar, 1968), a Russian tale retold by Arthur Ransome. had just won the Award.

Uri didn't know what it was! I remember telling him something like, "You'll get to know about it quite quickly!"

He did!
