Children's literature author Kate DiCamillo to receive 2013 Kerlan Award
The University of Minnesota Libraries will present children's literature author Kate DiCamillo with the 2013 Kerlan Award at Elmer L. Andersen Library on Saturday June 8th.
Kate DiCamillo is the author of The Magician's Elephant, a New York Times bestseller; The Tale of Despereaux, awarded the Newbery Medal; Because of Winn-Dixie, a Newbery Honor book; and six books starring Mercy Watson, including the Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride. She shares writing credit on her Geisel winning easy reader series Bink and Gollie with Allison McGhee. A resident ofїїMinneapolis, DiCamillo was born in Philadelphia and raised in Florida.The award presentation and speech by DiCamillo will begin at 10:00 a.m. and is free and open to the public. which requires advance registration by May 27

The Kerlan Award is presented annually їin recognition of singular attainments in the creation of childrenїs literature and in appreciation for generous donation of unique resources to the Kerlan Collection for the study of childrenїs literature.ї Previous winners include Walter Dean Myers, Katherine Patterson, Jean Craighead George, Lois Lowry, and Karen Hesse.
The Children's Literature Research Collections (CLRC), an internationally recognized resource in the field of childrenїs literature, contains six core collections and several smaller collections.ї
The Kerlan Collection presently contains more than 100,000 childrenїs books as well as original manuscripts, artwork, galleys, and color proofs for more than 12,000 childrenїs books. One-eighth of the books are inscribed by the author or illustrator. The Collection includes books that are significant in the history of childrenїs literature, award books, classics, and representative books from Great Britain, Australia, Denmark, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany and others.
