An excellent choice to consider for very young but older children as well is /Do Re Mi: If You Can Read Music, Thank Guido d'Arezzo /by Susan L. Roth.//Publishers Weekly said it perfectly: "Roth's collages, populated by doll-like figures, quickly shoo away any misgivings that music history could be a bore, and make a marvelous counterpoint for her carefully researched prose." / / That prose is the story of Guido d'Arezzo and his method of musical notation that changed the role of music everywhere forever. He even chose the do-re-mi syllables from a poem he set to music a thousand years ago. It's a fun story that children will enjoy as they realize someone actually invented the system of lines and spaces and notes that we still use today. http://susanlroth.com/do_re_mi.htm

And full disclosure - I recently collaborated with Susan on /Hands Around the Library: Protecting Egypt's Treasured Books -/ both filled, as are all of Susan's books, with her exuberant cut-paper collages/./
