I'm a bit late to the party, but I do want to mention the book ROSE O'NEILL: THE GIRL WHO LOVED TO DRAW by Linda Brewster. O'Neill (1874-1944) was a self-taught artist who as a child lived in a sod hut on the Nebraska prairie yet became a successful New York illustrator by age 20. The book is a childhood biography illustrated with more than 100 of O'Neill's original illustrations. Brewster has selected art by the adult artist to complement the childhood narrative. It's fascinating to see how her early experiences influenced later, unrelated work.
