Thanks for sending the extra links, Debbie. Very interesting. I think an object which is spiritually alive in the way described here, definitely falls into a different category from sacred art, as you say, different from art all together. How frustrating to be ruled against in this case. I really liked the Northern Arizona Museum Director's letter on the subject (link below). So eloquent.

I would hope that, given the high prices, at least these katsina friends will be carefully housed by their current owners until the law can be changed or some other accommodation can be made that would bring them home. Cold comfort perhaps, but I think the winners in the cause of justice are the ones who persevere in keeping the end goal in sight and gain it by inches. Good things have happened in the area of self-determination for Native tribes. The resumption of whaling by the Makah, for example.

I would love to see the Native American side of the struggle more a part of the American civil rights conversation and curriculum and body of literature. Maybe there are some good books out there I don't know about, but I haven't found much on my own.

Any librarians out there know of some good books on Native American civil rights or self-determination stories that should get more attention? I'd love to see a book for kids about the Fish Wars which is the part of the struggle taking place primarily in the Pacific Northwest. I'm sure there are other stories from around the continent that should be better known.

If there happen to be publishers on the list, is there any interest in publishing this kind of work? Or would it be a better fit for smaller regional presses? Or perhaps tribes themselves would like to publish those stories. Certainly there are more options available for that than ever before. Debbie do you know of any tribes who are publishing their own histories in a format that could be used by schools? Have you ever considered writing them yourself? You seem an ideal candidate to me.
