I have a few favorites that we use with older teens. The following don't n eed to be read entirely, but can be explored by chapter/topic.

The joy of X : a guided tour of math, from one to infinity / Steven Strogat z.

This is a popular work, explaining math concepts through everyday life exam ples, using humor and language that bring the topics to life and make them understandable.

Zero : the biography of a number / Charles Seife.

Traces the history of the concept and evolution of the number 0, using humo r and lively writing.

Stiff : the curious lives of human cadavers / Mary Roach.

I love this look at the use of cadavers through history. Mary Roach is jus t a fabulous science writer, and brings her topics to life using a blend of humor and fascinating examples from history.

A wonderful biography that deals with science and medicine, as well as huma n rights is:

The immortal life of Henrietta Lacks / Rebecca Skloot.

Chronicles the compelling story of Henrietta Lacks, a poor black woman, who se cells were harvested without her knowledge and used to develop a cell li ne that made possible major medical discoveries in cancer research, gene ma pping, polio vaccines, AIDS treatments and much more. While she was suffer ing from cancer, unable to afford treatment, and her children living in pov erty, corporations were making huge financial gains from the discoveries ma de using her cells.

This book is an amazing look at race, poverty and medical ethics.
