One of the highlights of this year and perhaps of my entire career happened with a 5th grade high level literature group reading THE SCHWA WAS HERE. As a final assignment I asked the students to write a letter to there favor ite character and tell that character what they admired and ask the charact er questions. I had a student with CP and she wrote to the blind girl in t he story. She really opened her heart about how they were alike, but she f ocused on a funny incident in the story when the blind character gave a sar castic answer to someone about needing help. My student went on to write a bout a similar incident that had happened to her on the playground. It was heart-warming that she could relate so well to the book in a personal way. Also, extremely interesting that she focused on the funny incident. Of c ourse, that book is hilarious all the way through! The student who received the letter and then had to write back as the book character and answer the letter was touched and wrote a wonderful letter
ba ck!! It was great to see what we have been talking about in action. Erlene Bishop Killeen erlene.killeen_at_stoughton.k12.wi.us Stoughton Area Schools 1601 West South Street Stoughton, WI 53589 608-877-5181
