Last year, the Arizona legislature passed a law, targeted at the Mexican American Studies program at Tucson Unified School District. They were using books written by Mexican American authors.
Tonight, PBS's "Need to Know" is about the program. In it, you learn that the people who wrote/passed the law made the claims that the books were anti-American, and even said that they books were promoting the overthrow of the US government. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the resistance to Latino literature is rooted in that sort of thinking.
Anyway--I think the episode will definitely be worth watching.
