I don't think we can ignore CBC Diversity, Christine, because CBC has a lot of power. When they announced their Diversity committee last year, it got lot of press. They are telling librarians that they are the place to go for books with "diverse" characters.
And, they've got some kind of support from ALA, too. At Midwinter, their panel was sponsored by ALA. I don't know what it means to have that sponsorship, but I do think we must pay attention to CBC's diversity initiative. Pay attention, and CALL attention to it.
I'll write to the YALSA and ALSC listservs today. Perhaps they know who, in ALA, to talk to so that some adjustments are made to ALA's sponsorship of it. At the very least, there should be a more prominent note at the CBC site and whenever ALA sponsors a CBC event that says "CBC only lists books that CBC members publish."
I'm glad CBC added RETURN TO SENDER. Maybe they're revisiting the policy regarding the books they promote. Time will tell. I went over to see if they'd also added A LIBRARY FOR JUANA or PARROT IN THE OVEN, but neither one is there. And, RETURN TO SENDER doesn't show up when you lick the Latino tag on the left column.
Several people posted to the discussion saying they order books that win ethnic awards right away, but there's obviously more who do NOT order them. Learning that they're not promoted by the publishers who publish them is disheartening. And, I have similar experiences, going from one exhibit booth to another, looking for books about American Indians, and coming up empty handed.
