Hi Elizabeth,

In response to your request below, I wanted to alert you to my Fall 2012 picture book, which may or may not fit your criteria. It's not about kids per se, but like many very young pictures, features animal characters. S PIKE, THE MIXED-UP MONSTER (illustrated by Melissa Sweet, ISBN: 978-1-4424-0601-8) is a friendship story based on a real critically endangered salamander that lives in only one place in the world—Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City. The book has three pages of back matter with facts about the carefully researched cast of Mexican characters--the axolotl, an armadillo, a Mexican vole, and a cinnamon te al duck. The book also uses Spanish words (and includes a Spanish glossary) to help set the scene. I'm thrilled to say that it was selected as a "Highly Commended" book by the Charlotte Zolotow Award committee.

My other new picture book is called THE TOOTH MOUSE (illustrated by Janice Nadeau, ISBN: 978-1-55453-565-1) It is set in Paris and uses some French in the text. It's based on a interview I did with a young French girl for Nick J r. She revealed that there's no such thing as a tooth fairy in France. Kids leave their baby teeth for *La Petite Souris*! As it turns out, children in Argentina, Algeria, Croatia, El Salvador, Greece, Mexico, Russia, Spai n, South Africa and many other countries around the world have a similar too th tradition! Here is what *The New York Times* said about the book.

I am not French or Mexican, but I write about things that surprise me, things I think all children will want to know about this great big wonderfully colorful world.

All my best, Susan Hood

I keep the database on LibraryThing.com here: A World Full of Color

. The database is viewable as a list, as a grid of book covers, and there are pull-down menus that let you filter by genre and age range, etc.

This is a labor of love and a hobby I do in my spare time, so it is certainly not a complete representation. In fact, I'm way behind on addi ng 2012 and 2013 titles, so people should feel free to email me with titles . (ISBNs will earn you brownie points.)

Remember, the criteria are: 1) the main character(s) MUST be kids of color 2) race is not the driving issue of the book (it can certainly play a small part, since of course our identities are important to us even whil e solving mysteries, but this database is specifically for books that are not dealing with race as an issue)
