Meg asked: "I would like to ask others if you attend the National Latino Children's Literature Conference at the University of Alabama, held every other year? Dr. Jamie Naidoo does an amazing job, but I couldn't help but n otice that attendance was relatively small for the quality of presenters th at he gathers. (Alma Flor Ada, Isabel Campoy, Joe Cepeda, Monica Brown, Raf ael Lopez…just to name a few). Also, are we throwing support behind The Américas Awards presentations/reception?
Jamie does an excellent job of bringing outstanding speakers to Tuscaloo sa, and I agree that the National Latino Children's Literature confere nce should be better attended. I am hoping to work with Jamie to provi de some regional SCBWI support for the next one, but the conference an d the awards both need more support from the publishers and librarians . As I have mentioned in other emails, the lack of information about "Dia" and "Noche" programs surprises me. I would love to find a way to help get these programs going in the schools and local libraries, perhaps someth ing along the lines of the mock Newbery activities in association with the Pura Bel Pre award and the Americas Awards nominations would help?
