Ginny,
I can't speak as a librarian, but I did order the Pura Belpres during the announcements; everything else will wait until I can cobble funds. These tend to be the books I like best -- I respect the Belpre committees' choices, as they've served me well in years past. I am still waiting with bated breath for my copy of /Aristotle and Dante/ (presumably because it won/honored so many awards), but my daughter has already now read and reviewed /The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano/, and my son has used /Martin de Porres/ as art instruction (we homeschool).
What else did I flag for my upcoming order list? Well, I usually get some of the Siberts -- this year, I want /Electric Ben/ and /Moonbird/; we will probably order all the Stonewalls at some point; from the CSKs, I picked three to start: /Each Kindness/, /No Crystal Stair/ and /I, Too, Am America/; I'd like to get a home copy of /The Miseducation of Cameron Post/ and /Seraphina/; haven't decided about the Batchelders yet - I can only take so much war, but am very curious about /A Game for Swallows/ (that war changed lives in my family); from YALSA it will be /Moonbird/ and /We've Got a Job/; and I am going to ask our local library to order /Anna, Emma and the Condors/. From the Caldecott and the Newbery, only /One Cool Friend/ made my initial list (though I'd like to see the art for /Sleep Like a Tiger/ and /Extra Yarn/).
Are those "weird" selections? Or does everybody go through and see what resonates with themselves / their community / their students?
Maia
Here are several questions for everyone: how many of us hurried to place orders for all the award books announced during the recent ALA conference? Caldecott? Check. Newbery? Maybe. What about the Belpre and the Coretta Scott King Award winners AND Honor Books?
