I agree with Christine. Awards that are focused on ethnicity should, I believe, remain honors for writers and illustrators from those communities. It is indeed a political moment -- and children *need* to see people that look and act like them, writing and illustrating books that they read.

p.s. Sidenote -- I don't think this should extend to the Stonewall... I do believe that gender and sexuality is fluid, and that boxing in the authors serves us little. If "straight" people write brilliant emancipatory LGBTQ stories that the LGBTQ community finds authentic, then we will have so many more healthy, happy kids. It's not that LGBTQ /authors/ aren't being published, it's that LGBTQ /stories/ aren't being heard. And you can't look at an author photo and say, "Oh, they look gay like me!" Or you can, but you may not be right... :)
