This conversation is exactly like the one regarding books about African Americans that took place in the 60s, 70s and a chunk of the 80s. Publishers can only publish what they have an opportunity to publish and many cast a wide net, eager to publish books about and by African Americans, Native Americans, Latinos, as well as those from other cultures. Folk in the market as well as readers assume those stories are being written, and rejected because of sales or whatever when in fact, few are written. As was the case with African Americans, many black writers turned to writing for adults first….and as gifted black writers surfaced, others thought about writing for kids. The same is true of writing about Latinos. Unfortunately, for many writers, no matter their background, writing children's books does not have the same stature as writing for adults but that will change for gifted Latino writers just as it has changed, and continues to change for African American writers.
