I agree completely with Ruth Gordon. (Except that I think there are often excellent books that never even get considered for distinctions, because the publisher doesn't have the resources or set-up to submit the book to dozens of different competitions or lists.)
I've said this before, and will again. Being "The Best," "Number One," etc.,--or else by definition second-rate--is not a lesson we want to teach kids. At least "winner" implies that there could be other factors than "bestness" involved. . "Outstanding"? "Our Choice"? No, it's not easy to find a better term, but it's worth keeping in mind.
