I wonder if there is a possibility of changing our language when we refer to elections, book awards, and the like? Might we speak not of "winners" in recognition that its antonym is "losers?" Books and candidates that have been considered are already "winners," in the sense that they have been selected by conscientious people who have thought about them (one hopes).
Perhaps some bright person might find a substitute word (or words) for the implication of loser when winner is used. (Sorry for the passive, I'm trying to depersonalize.)
Apologies if this is muddled but my brain may be frozen in this unusual wine country weather. (Maybe a drink might help.)
