Thank you, Ginny, for calling attention to KT's singular achievement.

I know it isn't really appropriate for me to promote the Horn Book on this forum, but in this case all praise goes to KT. She combines probing histori cal scholarship, a profound knowledge of children's books, and an excitemen t about her subject that is unparalleled. I am thrilled and proud to be pub lishing this series--and I hope everyone finds her "Caldecott at 75" column s as spectacular and enlightening as I do.

K.T. Horning's Caldecott series for The Horn Book

In the January/February issue of The Horn Book Magazine, HB Executive Edito r Martha V. Parravano announced a new series of columns recognizing seventy -five years of the Caldecott Medal. These columns will be written by CCBC D irector Kathleen T. Horning. Because she's too modest, she probably will no t announce the series to the CCBC-Net community herself.

Martha writes that K.T. will "examine one winning book per decade
, focusing each time on a book that spotlights the developin g identity of the American picture book. K.T.'s inaugural column appears in this issue, beginning with the 1930s and Thomas Handforth's now nearly for gotten Mei Li. In print, Horning focuses on how Mei Li helped the nascent c hildren's book field answer the question 'What is a picture book?' Online
, you will find her fascinating research into the background of author-illustrator Handforth, the China he discovered on his world trave ls, and the real little girl who became the inspiration for the character M ei Li..."

Read the article in the print issue of the Jan/Feb Horn Book, and also read the online background material http://www.hbook.com/horn-book-magazine C lick on Recent Posts.

This is one of the quite glorious ways to observe this Caldecott 75th anniv ersary year so carefully planned by Tessa Michaelson Schmidt and her ALA/AL SC committee! For more information, visit http://www.ala.org/alsc/Caldecott 75

It's a timely underscoring of the upcoming announcement of the 2013 Caldeco tt Medal winner.

And what a valuable resource it is for countless future readings and uses. It's one more substantial contribution offered to the book community by The Horn Book and by K.T. whose speeches and articles are consistently signifi cant.

Peace, Ginny
