I might have posted this before but a favorite is OCTOBER MOURNING by Leslea Newman (Candlewick) due to its powerful statement about life and loss and insanity in a world filled with ignorance.
Coincidentally, I just finished reading this book a couple days ago, and it truly is phenomenal. Not only for the reasons Lee states, but also because the poetry itself is so wonderful. And I love that at the end of the book, Newman identifies the formal types of poems she uses, and clarifies which poems were inspired by other poems. Unnecessary information for most poetry lovers; invaluable information for students and those new to reading poetry who, thanks to her, might become poetry lovers.
