SFPL Mock Caldecott 2012   Here are San Francisco PublicLibrary’s very interesting Mock Caldecott results.  We discus sed the following books in two groups:     Abe Lincoln’s Dream, by Lane Smith (Roaring Brook) Extra Yarn, by Mac Barnett, illus. by Jon Klassen (Balzer & Bray) Green, by Laura Vaccaro Seeger (Roaring Brook) I, Too, Am America, by Langston Hughes, illus. by Bryan Collier (Simon & Schuster) Island: A Story of the Galapagos, by Jason Chin (Flash Point) More, by I. C. Springman, illus. by Brian Lies (Houghton Mifflin) Step Gently Out, by Helen Frost, photos by Rick Lieder (Candlewick)A Strange Place to Call Home, by Marilyn Singer, illus. by Ed Young (Chronicle) This is Not My Hat, by Jon Klassen (Candlewick)    Group 2 had a definite winner and two definite Honor books:   WINNER, with 48 points (8 first place, 4 second, and 2 third):  THIS IS NOT MY HAT, by Jon Klassen HONOR BOOKS, both with 33 points:  MORE,and STEP GENTLY OUT.   After that, point counts dropped to Extra Yarn with 24, and then to 12 or far fewer points.   Group 1 was far more problematic.  There were 3 titles with the same point spread:   Jon Klassen’s two books each had 34 points, with 5 first pla ce, 2 second, and 4 thirds!  And ISLAND by Jason Chin had 35 points, b ut most of them were from its 9 second place votes (it had 1 first place an d 2 third.)  The next was ABE LINCOLN’S DREAM with 23 points ( 4 of them first), and everything else dropped way down.   This type of situation could happen in the real committee, but unfortunately we did not have the time for more discussion and a second or third ballot. I considered doing this via email but with the Christmas holiday right arou nd the corner, and vacations, and all of my other deadlines, I realized I j ust couldn’t make that work.   Carla Kozak Children’s and Teen Collection Development Specialist San Francisco Public Library
