Here in Suffolk County, Long Island, we recently held our Mock Caldecott event, with 30 librarians participating. Our winning title was Unspoken by Henry Cole, and two honor books were chosen as well: Oh,No! By Candace Fleming and Eric Rohmann, along with And Then It's Spring by Julie Fogliano and Erin Stead.

For our mock Newbery, which will be held in early January, the following titles were chosen to be discussed. I think they are all worthy of being considered favorites this year! Wonder by RJ Palacio Liar and Spy by Rebecca Stead The Mighty Miss Malone by Christopher Paul Curtis The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage Crow by Barbara Wright Summer of the Gypsy Moths by Sara Pennypacker Spendors and Glooms by Laura Amy Schlitz

 Favorites of the Year

It WAS a good year!

So, if the Newbery committee called on me due to extreme indecision, there would be no hesitation on my part. I'd choose Wonder by R.J. Palaccio...it was a pleasure and an honor to visit Augie's world and meet his wonderful family too.

Some picture books that enchanted me in 2012:

Cold Snap by Eileen Spinelli (for the New Englander at heart)

Bear in the Book (for its utterly child-centric story and kiddie artwork)

Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson (beautiful, believable and touching--how does she do it?)

Little Tug by Stephen Savage (loved the retro artwork and simple story, reminded me of my childhood favorite, the Little Engine that Could)

Maggie's Chopsticks by Alan Woo (unbeatable combination of gorgeous artwork and story that holds appeal on several levels)

My No, No, No Day! By Rebecca Patterson (had us all in a huddle laughing like hyenas out on the tech services floor)

Nighttime Ninja by Barbara DaCosta (loved the fresh, new twist on an old topic)

The Reader by Amy Hest (another author who never ceases to amaze and delight--her simple story speaks volumes)

Red, White and Boom! By Lee Wardlaw (ah, finally, a 4th of July book full of vibrant energy that could rock story time too!)

There were many, many great non-fiction titles this year but if there were an Oscar for children's books, my vote goes to this title for its super unique appeal:

City Chickens by Christine Hepperman (the story of a Minnesota chicken rescue, a safe place for hens in need--just about melted me)

 Favorites of the Year

It's that time of year again when we invite everyone in the CCBC-Net community to share your favorite children's and young adult books published over the past year.

What are you 2012 standouts?

Megan
