Among my favorite picture books of the year is Henry Coles' UNSPOKEN: A STORY OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD (Scholastic), a haunting, wordless story about a young girl who finds a runaway slave hiding in her barn.
Cole has outdone himself with this book, using a completely different palette - incredible graphite art unlike his usual full-color picture books featuring whimsical characters.
UNSPOKEN is a book to speak about.
