My absolute favorites for the 2012 year:
Teen-Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein. Rarely have I had a book that com pletely took my breath away. I literally gasped when I realized what had t o be done, and it took me days to stop grieving. It's not a book that made me sob; it just made my heart break. Amazing. Days of Blood & Starlight by Laini Taylor. What an imagina tion! What a powerful grip with language! What memorable characters! Thi s isn't just another love story of star-crossed mythical creatures. This i s true romance, well written, surrounded by war, totally original monsters, and knuckle biting suspense.
Children's-Wonder by R. J. Palacio. Every classroom should read this book. Better yet, everyone in the world should read this book. Auggie's journe y toward self confidence leaves a trail of humor, pathos and wisdom. Return to the Willows by Jacqueline Kelly. I am a huge fan of Kenneth Grahame's Wind in the Willows, so every time there is a sequel I am hesitant to allow the baton to be passed. But Kelly did a ma sterful job of making the new stories a seamless addition, and equally deli ghtful.
Picture Books-Abe Lincoln's Dream by Lane Smith. The combination of humor and understated observations about the United States, plus Smith's delightf ul illustrations, make this a book that will encourage much conversation. And Then It's Spring by Julie Fogliano, ill ustrated by Erin Stead. Every time I read it I feel peaceful, hopeful and joyful. Plus I love that turtle!
Nonfiction-Moonbird: A Year On the Wind with the Great Survivor B95 by Phil lip Hoose. Every one of Hoose's books becomes a favorite, leading me towar d wanting to know even more about the subject. This bird is such an exampl e of strength and determination. I will feel a great loss when B95 does no t return.
It was a good year.
