Code Name Verity is one of my favorite books this year. I agree with Angela's reasoning about why it works well as a teen novel plus it is usually teenagers, 18 and 19-year-olds, who are sent to fight in wars. It's also a young love story, and a compelling adventure with moral questions and history young people would find interesting. When I was 18 I think I would have felt my generation was up to a few of the challenges faced by the characters in the book. From a distance of 40 more years, they all seem so terribly young and extraordinarily, impossibly brave.

As I read Code Name Verity, I tried to figure out why this was a YA novel rather than an adult novel. My conclusion: the book was about the friendship between the 2 girls. And when they started their friendship, they were just girls, girls who grew up very quickly in a war situation. So, while they were adult (granted, very young adults) narrators, their story was based in a very teenage-feeling time frame. I am looking forward to hearing what others thought about this book in particular!
