Hello, folks.
This is the perfect time to share a handy resource with you all! I blog for Publishers Weekly on children's bookselling, and often write about the need for more books and more kinds of stories featuring protagonists of color.
A few years ago, I started a book database on LibraryThing.com for books featuring main characters of color where race was NOT the driving force of the story. (It's much easier to track down the titles that are about race. Those are of course worthy and important and wonderful books; the focus of this resource is to gather the Ramona Quimbys and Meg Wallaces of color and the Geds and M.C. Higgins and Buds and Bobbys, etc.)
I add to it as new books come into the store, and as authors and editors let me know what great new books are coming out. I am also looking for books I've missed that meet the criteria, so feel free to email me offlist with more to add!)
So far, there are almost 850 titles in the database for babies to teens. The database is sortable by various tags (by age -- Babies and Toddlers, Picture Books, Early Readers, etc. -- and by genre (Poetry, Science Fiction and Fantasy, etc.).
It's a labor of love, and imperfect. I hope it's also a wonderful resource that teachers and librarians and parents use.
It's called A World Full of Color . In case the embedded link there doesn't translate to the listserv, the html is:
Happy reading!!
