I've used We Are All Born Free in intergenerational workshops -- great way to introduce human rights.
Lyn Miller-Lachmann-- your book Gringolandia fits into this discussion -- exploring the impact of torture and the fracturing of family because of Chile's military regime. Most the teens I work with whose families have been impacted by torture have found the book feels true for their families as well -- no matter where in the world they come from.
Two of my books fit as well:
My Grandma's the Mayor, a picture book, shares some of the ambivalence children feel when someone they love serves in an elected office and how great it feels to contribute to your community.
Journey of Dreams, a middle grade novel, follows a Guatemala family from the highlands in 1984-85 who were ultimately reunited because of the Sanctuary Movement when concerned individuals in Tucson, AZ came together under a civil initiative to challenged the US policy that turned away refugees from Central America. The movement grew across the southwest then throughout the US and Canada until the policy aligned with the law.
