PEN Congratulates Children's Book Award Winners

PEN is pleased to announce that Patricia McKissack has won the PEN/Steven Kroll Award Honoring the Author of an Illustrated Children's Book, for /Never Forgotten /(Schwartz and Wade/Random House). This annual award is being conferred for the first time in 2012 and comes with a prize of $5,000.Judges for the Kroll Award were Carmen Agra Deedy, Susan Kuklin and Vera B. Williams.

Congratulations also to Sarah Dooley, winner of the PEN/Phyllis Reynolds Naylor Working Writers Fellowship for her work-in-progress, /Free Verse/ (forthcoming from Putnam). This $5,000 annual Fellowship has been developed to help published children's and young adult novelists whose work is of high literary caliber but who have not yet attracted a broad readership. The award is designed to assist a writer at a crucial moment in his or her career to complete a book-length work-in-progress. Judges for the 2012 Naylor Fellowship were Daniel Handler, Lyn Miller-Lachmann and Neal Shusterman.

Award winners will be honored at the 2012 PEN Literary Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at CUNY Graduate Center's Proshansky Auditorium in New York City.
