I recently put a few books by Mo Willems on a bibliography of "books boys can't resist." I work with lots of first and second grade boys who are struggling readers. They love the Elephant and Piggie books (though the name "Gerald" is a little tricky for them). They also like the "Cat the Cat" series. I think the repetition is great for applying sight words to "real text." Kids are engaged with these books, which is so important. They want to take them home to read.
Of course, Knuffle Bunny is a classic read aloud. Most kids can relate to losing a favorite stuffed animal.
I have a Mo Willems book for the YA crowd in my collection: You can Never Find a Rickshaw When It Monsoons: The World on One Cartoon a Day. (Hyperion Paperbacks, 2006)
Also, in my recent research, I found a parody of Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! called Don’t Let The Republican Drive the Bus! (just published August 7, 2012, authors: Eric Goligen and Dan Golan.) It looks pretty funny.
