One of the things that is different about the Printz Award compared to the Newbery Medal is that the winning author is not required to be a U.S. citizen or resident. This opens up the award to authors from other nations, and many of the winners have indeed come from outside the U.S.
There have been a striking number of winning or honor book authors from Australia or New Zealand, including Lucy Christopher, Judith Clarke, Sonya Hartnett, Elizabeth Knox, Margo Lanagan, Melina Marchetta, and Markus Zusak. (Have I missed anyone?)
Since we have a number of people on this list from Australia, I am wondering how these authors and their books are regarded at home, and whether or not the Printz Award is well-known there.
The same questions could be asked (and answered) for authors from the U.K. and Canada, if someone would care to respond.
