Thanks so much for bringing up "Going Bovine," Erlene. I didn't read it until after it was announced as the Printz Award winner. In fact, I had intentionally skipped over it for months because the jacket art was a turn-off for me -- it just looked so silly.

Initially, I was disappointed that it was announced as the winner, because I had my heart so set on something else that year which wasn't even an honor book -- can't even remember now what that was. I read "Going Bovine" all in one sitting, and just a few chapters in, I stopped being disappointed because I found it to be one of the best, funniest, deepest, most memorable YA novels I had read in a long time. As a Spanish major in college, I had had to read "Don Quijote" more than once, and I loved all the connections between "Going Bovine" and "Don Quijote," especially the way in which Libba Bray satirized contemporary society, in the spirit Cervantes did in his own time in DQ.

I don't think it's necessary for someone to have read "Don Quijote" to appreciate "Going Bovine" but for those who have, I imagine the reading experience will be all the more satisfying. I would be curious to hear from other readers of "Going Bovine" who have or haven't read "Don Quijote" to see what they thought of "Going Bovine."

I don't even know why I liked it so much -- I think the fact that it was so different from anything I had read in a long time. Sort of bizarre and confusing -- I was often not sure as a reader what was real and what wasn't -- most of the time it didn't matter!! When it was named the winner, I was delighted!
