To answer your question, yes, American Born Chinese won the Printz Award. We recently used this as a Common Read for our School of Education undergraduates, and it was a great discussion book for these 18-22 year olds, as well. Gene Luen Yang was extremely popular with the college-age crowd, and he gave a wise, funny, and insightful public lecture for us, which you can view at:
I will return to my original point that I believe the openness of the Printz Award terms as they are written is what allowed a book like American Born Chinese to even be seriously considered. I don't think a graphic novel would even be eligible for the Newbery Medal, owing to the critierion that states that illustrations can not be considered unless they detract from the text.
And now back to the original question. I recall that American Born Chinese won NBA, was it also Printz? It is an all time favorite of mine -- brilliant, engaging, innovative, engaging, important all in one. Marc Aronson
