I'm glad Dean began talking about faves -- I did not want to hijack one dis cussion into another. I do think Lynn raises an interesting point: biologis ts talk about the "search image" used by predators. Hunters do not scan eve rything around then, they have a set of characteristics they know mean "pre y" and they look for those. Perhaps we as a field have not developed our "s earch image" for literary excellence in anthologies, plays, YA poetry, and YA NF in the same way as we have for YA novels. In NF, for example, one sta ndard may be narrative skill "reads like a novel," but another might be cla rity of thought, or breadth and impact of subject, or immersive quality ach ieved in a marriage of text, image, and design, or insight, or research, et c. So perhaps what we see in the results reflects a broader absence of stan dards -- and there Common Core may be useful. I certainly am seeing more in terest in literary and YA NF from publishers.
And now back to the original question. I recall that American Born Chinese won NBA, was it also Printz? It is an all time favorite of mine -- brillian t, engaging, innovative, engaging, important all in one.
