I can't resist this thread. BENNY BAKES A CAKE is a great call. Hard to i magine how it could be a better book -- great for reading aloud. I'm glad it was mentioned.

I miss being able to give these quirky favorites as presents:

TOOTHGNASHER SUPERFLASH, a Pinkwater classic. I never met a kid who di dn 't like that book.

ORDINARY JACK and ABSOLUTE ZERO, the first two of the Bagthorpe series by Helen Cresswell and possibly the funniest children's novels ever

Penelope Lively's THE GHOST OF THOMAS KEMPE

I'm happy to report that Gone Away Lake and The Saturdays are still in prin t.

A nonfiction book I love that's out of print is Lasky's SURTSEY, about th e creation of an island off the coast of Iceland. Also Donna Jackson's THE BONE DETECTIVES.

I'd like to add, Ishi, Last of his Tribe (because it's a great book and because it's on a school's summer

reading list and I can't get more copies!)
