Two picture books I'm pretty sure are out of print, but need to come back:
When the Sky Is Like Lace by Elinor Landor Horwitz. The language is absolu tely lyrical, and the image of dancing with otters by moonlight has stayed forever in my mind. A wonderful example of vocabulary, creativity, and bea uty.
Horace by Holly Keller. A "just right" story about adoption. I love the i mage of tigers adopting a leopard.
