I would like to say, from my perspective as a middle school assistant principal, 4-6 may be considered prime audience for "middle grade" YA. Eighth grade is an entirely different reader -- enjoying a harder-driving, more adult topic oriented read on the one hand and absolutely little reading on the other hand. I also believe that the Common Core reading standards is attempting to shift the conversation around the meaning of a Young Adult text.
