I would also put middle grade novels down as far as Grade 2, given that there are a lot of very short novels, some with occasional black and white illustration that do appeal to Grade 2 children. Billie B Brown novels by Sally Rippin, for instance are immensely popular with Grade 2 and Grade 3 girls if they can manage them... if not, they do seem keen to attempt to be seen to be reading real chapter books like the bigger girls.
Given that there really isn't a name for chapter books for the lower grades, would they would qualify as middle-grade novels?
